External Communications Advisor supports the External Communications Manager and the broader communications team to protect and enhance the reputation of Jetstar by delivering proactive and reactive communications. The primary focus is external communications but may also include some activities that are internally focused. 

As External Communications Advisor, your accountabilities will include: 

  • Manage media enquiries by drafting timely, high-quality public responses and liaising with journalists about key issues impacting the business 
  • Draft media releases relating to key business announcements 
  • Assist with producing external comms materials including key messages, Q&A’s, web content, social media posts and talking points 
  • Liaise with subject matter experts from across the business to develop content for a variety of communications channels and audiences 
  • Liaise with the Qantas communications team on Group announcements or initiatives 
  • Develop strong media relationships across Jetstar’s AU and NZ network and lead the development of new media channels  
  • Contribute to the strategy for Jetstar’s social media, including Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter 
  • Provide tactical support in crisis management scenarios, working closely with the Jetstar and Qantas communication teams and senior management to manage the impact on Jetstar’s brand and reputation 
  • Provide logistical and communications support for media and stakeholder launches across the Group (ranging from new routes, fleet additions, first flights, and major milestones) 
  • This includes logistical support in the form of event management as well as assisting with the internal and external communications deliverables (e.g. assisting with media materials, producing content for external and internal use) 
  • Maintain and improve the systems required to communicate with key stakeholders and media, including management of media lists, picture and video library, document library and factsheets 
  • Manage the collation and distribution of media coverage summary reports during and post a major announcement or issue. 
  • This role will be on an on-call media roster, which includes some out of hours work    

To be considered, key skills will include: 

  • Tertiary Qualification or final year student in Communications, Marketing or related area 
  • Demonstrated experience in writing clear, concise copy for media or customer-facing organisations 
  • Experience maintaining systems and processes. Event management experience is preferred 
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and with a range of internal/external stakeholders 
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical ability and problem solving orientation 
  • Strong understanding of media landscape, social media, platform features and opportunities for communication 
  • Outstanding communications skills both verbal and written 
  • Exposure to issues rich, high-profile and customer-facing environments 
  • Experience developing communications to reach broad and diverse audiences 
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams 
  • Exposure to highly regulated industries
