Thrown into an Operations adventure: Hamish’s experience as an Operations Graduate.
The Jetstar Graduate Program has been an incredible journey so far.
I joined the Jetstar Graduate Program in February 2023 and have been exposed so closely to the day-to-day operations. Learning about the Jetstar Operation Control Centre (JOCC) and the significant amount of work that goes on to ensure each flight takes off each day has been such an insightful experience over the past 18 months. I’ve had such a great time working with so many different teams right across the business.
Thrown into the heart of the Operation
For my first rotation, I worked within the Airline Performance team supporting the Jetstar Operations Control Centre. During this time, I was able to be involved in a review of the Operation Centre procedures and processes. As a team, we also worked through identifying opportunities for improvement and ensuring that the processes of the JOCC remained compliant with all the appropriate rules and regulations. A great experience in the team was having the opportunity to work closely with the Regional Operations Centre (ROC) at QantasLink, to strategize and collaborate on operational improvements.
Next step – Workforce Planning
For my second rotation, I was able to work within the Workforce Planning Flying Operations Training Team, which involves the planning and rostering of an exhaustive amount of training across both our narrowbody and widebody fleet. I was able to get an in-depth insight into both the day of operations training workload, and how much of an impact it can have when our training pipeline is disrupted, to the long-term strategic planning for our Flying Operations Team, to ensure we have the right number of pilots into the future.
An adventure to Fiji
During my time in Operations Delivery and Workforce Planning, I also had the opportunity to work on the Port Readiness Program and helped work through the process of establishing new routes. I had the opportunity of working closely with various operational stakeholders to launch the inaugural flights between Melbourne and Fiji on the A321neo. I had the chance to join the Airport Services launch team who went to Fiji for the operational launch and got a great insight into the operations of one of our popular destinations. I also had the opportunity to be involved in other new routes such as Brisbane to Osaka and Seoul, all of which was an incredible experience to see all the work various operational stakeholders do to set up so many new routes and destinations.
It’s honestly been such a rewarding experience being a Graduate at Jetstar.
